Music scholar Daniel Cavicchi isn't a musicologist and doesn't think overmuch about composers. He teaches American studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, and traces his ethnographic approach to music scholarship to the Music in Daily Life Project overseen by the seminal popular music scholar Charles Keil at SUNY Buffalo. In 1993 Cavicchi, Keil, and Susan D. Crafts published My Music: 41 interviews with everyday fans that explode the fantasy of exclusive "taste subcultures" so dear to sociologists and marketers (and critics too) just by recounting musical preferences that cross more genre boundaries than experts consider appropriate. In 1998, he turned his Brown Ph.D. thesis into Tramps Like Us: Music & Meaning Among Springsteen Fans, dominated by summaries of and longish quotes from about 100 Bruce devotees that focus on feelings and experiences while barely touching the music itself ? even though Cavicchi's candid passion for that music helps ground and humanize the material.

As a critic, I have reservations about a method Cavicchi never suggests is the only way to address music. But as a democrat I welcome it. "My Music"
changed the way I think about fandom and established Cavicchi's right to write music history his way. EU president Van Rompuy to unveil banking union plan

Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, warned last week that the eurozone is under "acute stress" and at risk of a downward spiral. She urged the eurozone to channel aid directly to struggling banks rather than via governments.

"Each country wants to help but if I am going to call on taxpayers in Germany, I must have guarantees that all is under control. Responsibility and control go hand in hand," she said after a crucial summit of the eurozone's Big Four powers in Rome.

"If I give moneystriaght to Spanish banks, I can't control what they do. That is how the treaties are written," she said.

A novel chemotherapeutic agent, the highly selective MEK1/2 inhibitor BAY 86-9766, may be a promising future treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In a preclinical therapeutic study, BAY 86-9766 was evaluated in one of the most aggressive mouse models for PDAC. The researchers induced endogenous genetic alterations in these mice, and within eight weeks, the mice developed invasive, lethal PDAC. These genetic alterations closely mimic what is found in most human cases of the disease.

Nicole Teichmann, Ph.D., of the Klinikum rechts der Isar at the Technische Universit?t M?nchen in Munich, Germany was quoted as saying, "We showed in our endogenous mouse model that our novel chemotherapeutic agent leads to dramatic tumor shrinkage after only one week of treatment. Moreover, the therapy was as effective in animals with advanced tumors and ascites, which is often the case if patients come to the clinic."

A daily treatment of 25 mg/kg with BAY 86-9766 prolonged the survival of the mice in the study compared to their 'placebo'-treated counterparts; median survival advantage was 20 days. The treatment caused dramatic tumor regression after only one week and was effective in animals with advanced tumors and ascites, which is often how patients present to the clinic. "We were really surprised that the tumor load dramatically decreases after one week of therapy and also that the treatment conferred such a strong overall survival benefit. In our hands, this is the first targeted drug to have shown such strong tumor effects in an endogenous mouse model of PDAC," Teichmann was quoted as saying about the results.

In most animals, the tumor relapsed after three weeks of treatment, which modeled the situation in humans. "Often patients respond to a therapy and after a while, the tumor relapses," she added. "We can exploit this same tumor relapse in the mouse to investigate the resistance mechanism to improve the therapeutic strategy."

"The mutations trigger the onset of a signaling cascade that is necessary for the survival and proliferation of the cancer cells," Teichmann explained. "Our novel chemotherapeutic drug inhibits one essential protein of this cascade and therefore leads to the cascade's shutdown."

These findings encourage testing in mouse models rather than xenograft models. "Our results support testing novel agents for pancreatic cancer in endogenous mouse models, rather than conventional xenograft models because they take into account the genetic and morphological heterogeneity of the disease and may be more predictive with regard to efficacy," Teichmann concluded.

Reports are surfacing that Syria may have shot down a Turkish fighter jet over Syrian waters in the Mediterranean Sea. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Office of Turkey's prime minister said late Friday that?Syria?downed a Turkish F-4 air force jet?over the Mediterranean.

Earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told?reporters at a news conference covered by NBC?News he could not say whether the plane had crashed or been shot down.

He said he had no word on the fate of the plane's?two airmen.

"The chief of general staff has made the necessary statement about the missing plane. I am not saying it was brought down at the point it fell. It is not possible to say this without knowing the exact facts," Erdogan told a news conference.

Turkish ships and helicopters were searching for the airmen in cooperation with Syrian vessels, Erdogan?said.

He said he wasn't aware of any Syrian claims of responsibility for bringing down the plane or of earlier reports that?Syrian authorities had apologized.?

Earlier, Lebanon's Hezbollah-owned Al-Manar television station said?that Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish military aircraft, quoting Syrian security sources.?

"Syrian security sources confirmed to a Manar correspondent in Damascus that Syrian defense forces shot down the Turkish fighter jet," a news flash on the Beirut-based station said.??

Pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen television station, which is based in Lebanon, also quoted what it said were Turkish sources as saying a jet had been shot down by Syrian air defenses.

Turkey -- a member of NATO -- earlier said it had lost contact with a plane while it was over the sea off the southeastern coast, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.?

In a statement, Turkey's military said a search and rescue operation was under way. It lost radar and radio contact with the plane after it took off from Erhac Airport in the eastern province of Malatya.?

Two crew were aboard the F-4 at the time of the crash, the Turkish state news agency Anatolia said on its website, citing Malatya governor Ulvi Saran.?

The Hurriyet daily newspaper reported that the plane had gone down in international waters and that the two airmen had been found alive and well following a search operation by Turkish forces.?

The Chief of General Staff declined to comment further on the incident beyond the written statement.?

Turkish warplanes regularly patrol along and off Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast.?

Tropical Storm Debby forms in Gulf

Tropical Storm Debby formed Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said, making it the first named storm in the Gulf of Mexico this season.

A tropical storm warning was issued for part of Louisiana's coast from the Pearl River west to Morgan City, the center said in a late afternoon advisory. New Orleans was not in the warning area, however.

With maximum sustained winds at 50 mph, Debby is likely to strengthen further, the center said.

Tropical-storm force winds extend 175 miles out from the center and should reach the U.S. coast by Sunday night.

"A slow northward motion is expected tonight, followed by a westward turn on Sunday" and then Debby's center should move over the northern Gulf over the next few days, the center added.

Areas from Louisiana to Florida's Panhandle were told to expect 3-6 inches of rain, and even 10 inches in some places.

As a precaution, many oil companies were evacuating rig workers and support personnel from offshore installations in the area.

About 8 percent of oil and natural gas production in the Gulf had been suspended, the U.S. government said Saturday.

Debby makes four named Atlantic storms before July 1 -- the first time that's happened since record-keeping began in 1851.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, but got off to an early start this year. In May, Tropical Storm Alberto formed off South Carolina and then quickly fizzled, while Tropical Storm Beryl soaked the Southeast.

Tropical Storm Chris on Friday briefly became a hurricane before fizzling out. Still, it was notable for being unusually far north for an early hurricane.

Government forecasters predict nine to 15 named storms in the Atlantic, with four to eight becoming hurricanes.

Grover Norquist Meets With House GOP

WASHINGTON -- All but 13 of the 289 Republicans in the House and Senate have signed a pledge vowing to oppose tax increases. On Thursday, the author of that pledge met with some of them to help them understand exactly what it is they signed.

In the process, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist sparked a fresh barrage of criticism from Democrats who accuse him and his pledge of being one of the major impediments to a bipartisan debt-cutting deal. Norquist and Republicans defended the pledge, denied that he is hurting his party because he has become a political target, and said that Washington's gridlock on the issue is not his fault.

The pledge has been "extremely helpful" to the Republican Party, Norquist told reporters after meeting privately with Republicans for about an hour, saying it has helped Republicans define a position that is popular with voters.

"They're not going to raise taxes to pay for Obama-sized government," Norquist, who heads Americans for Tax Reform, said of Republicans. "They're going to reduce Obama-sized government down to a size the American people will tolerate and are willing to pay for."

Thursday's session came at a time when some Republicans in Congress and elsewhere have been distancing themselves from Norquist's pledge, saying all options need to be available if the two parties are to concoct a debt-reduction agreement. It also comes during an election-year fight over whether to extend expiring tax cuts for the rich at the end of this year, as Republicans want and President Barack Obama and Democrats oppose, and whether to overhaul the entire tax code.

People in the meeting said around 15 House GOP lawmakers and about 100 aides attended. The session focused on how to respond to questions about the pledge and traced its history and explained its meaning, participants said, adding that no lawmakers gave the impression that they wanted to back away from it.

"There was no discussion in there today about amending anything, wiggling around or anything," said Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C.

With some in Congress beginning to concentrate on how the two parties might reach a budget agreement later this year, some Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have expressed a willingness to eliminate tax breaks and use some of the money that would produce to reduce deficits. That would violate a tenet of Norquist's pledge, which says any money raised that way must be used to lower tax rates.

Early this month, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a leading national figure in the GOP, said he had never signed the pledge because he does not believe politicians should "outsource your principles and convictions to people."

Norquist told reporters that those who have signed the pledge have made a "commitment to the American people" and should "focus on the commitment they made."

The bearded Norquist, whose pledge has been around since 1986, has become a favorite whipping boy for Democrats though he is scarcely a household name. With even GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney having signed the pledge last year, Democrats see it as the symbol ? and a cause ? of the GOP's refusal to back a deficit-cutting deal last summer as Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, tried reaching a compromise.

"They ought to be sitting down and working things out instead of holding court for him," said Rep. Sander Levin, top Democrat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, as he wandered past the committee hearing room where the meeting was being held. "Norquist is here to hold feet to the fire when what we need are open minds."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called Norquist on Thursday "the leader of the Republican Party." House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she believes Norquist and congressional Republicans "are in touch every day" and said Norquist believes his pledge is more important than the oath lawmakers take to uphold the Constitution.

Norquist said Democratic criticism is "a matter of desperation" for them. He said Reid is putting some rank-and-file Democrats facing difficult re-election fights under excruciating political pressure because they may be forced to decide whether to oppose continuing tax cuts for the rich.

"He's destroying these peoples' political careers," Norquist said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A House committee is poised to vote on whether to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to turn over more Justice Department documents on a flawed gun-smuggling probe that resulted in hundreds of guns illicitly purchased in Arizona gun shops winding up in Mexico.

The likelihood of a contempt vote rose after Holder and Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., failed to reach agreement Tuesday in a 20-minute meeting at the Capitol.

Issa wanted the documents immediately. Holder told reporters he would not turn over documents on the gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious unless Issa agreed to another congressional briefing on the Justice Department material. Holder wants an assurance from Issa that the transfer of the records would satisfy a subpoena from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which Issa heads.

"If we receive no documents, we'll go forward" with a contempt vote, Issa told reporters.

Holder says he is prepared to turn over documents detailing how the department arrived at the conclusion that federal agents engaged in a risky tactic called gun-walking. In February 2011, when the controversy over the law enforcement operation was first disclosed, the department denied that agents had engaged in gun-walking.

"It's a whole variety of material, and it's consistent with what we have already made available ? emails, documents of that nature ? that really go into the way in which the department handled itself from February of 2011 until December of 2011," Holder told reporters.

Ordinarily, such deliberative documents are off-limits to Congress. In Operation Fast and Furious, the Justice Department's initial incorrect denials are seen as providing justification for Congress' document demands.

Issa and the House Republican leadership have asked whether the department's initial denial in a Feb. 4, 2011, letter to Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, was part of a broader effort to obstruct a congressional investigation.

The material "pretty clearly demonstrates that there was no intention to mislead, to deceive," Holder told reporters.

"The attorney general has made an unprecedented offer to turn over documents that are part of the Department of Justice's internal deliberations and work product and to brief the committee on their contents," said Rep. Adam Schiff of California, one of the committee's Democrats and a former federal prosecutor. "Regrettably, Chairman Issa refuses to take yes for an answer."

"We have offered to make materials available ... to brief on those documents, to answer any questions that might come up with regard to the documents that we produced," the attorney general said.

"The ball's in their court," Holder said. "We made what we thought was an extraordinary offer."

Issa took a different view: "After this meeting I cannot say that I am optimistic" for avoiding a contempt vote.

Issa spokesman Frederick Hill said that at the meeting, "the attorney general indicated he would only be willing to produce a subset of documents that numbered fewer than 1,300 pages if the committee would first agree that the production of these documents would end the committee's investigation of the Justice Department."

Issa declined the offer.

In a letter to Issa on Tuesday night, Deputy Attorney General James Cole said "our offer would have provided the committee with unprecedented access to these documents, many of which are not covered by the committee's subpoenas in this matter."

It costs just $1.36 to charge an iPad for a year

NEW YORK (AP) ? That coffee you're drinking while gazing at your iPad? It cost more than all the electricity needed to run those games, emails, videos and news stories for a year.

The annual cost to charge an iPad is just $1.36, according to the Electric Power Research Institute, a non-profit research and development group funded by electric utilities.

By comparison, a 60-watt compact fluorescent bulb costs $1.61, a desktop PC adds up to $28.21 and a refrigerator runs you $65.72.

The group, known as EPRI, studied the power consumption of Apple Inc.'s iPad to determine the effect that the newly-popular devices might have on the nation's electricity use.

The answer: not much.

If the number of iPads triples from the current 67 million, they would need the electricity from one small power plant operating at full strength.

But if people are using iPads instead of televisions to play video games, or ditching their desktop computers for iPads, the shift to tablets could mean lower overall power consumption. A desktop computer uses 20 times more power than an iPad.

Baskar Vairmohan, the EPRI researcher who conducted the iPad test, said the group is now studying usage to understand whether the explosion of tablets is adding to power consumption, or reducing it.

Residential power demand is on track to fall for the third straight year, according to the government. A weak economy is keeping people in smaller houses and shacked up with others. At the same time, efficiency programs are pushing more efficient light bulbs, air conditioners and other devices into homes. Refrigerators use a quarter of the power they used a generation ago, according to EPRI.

For the iPad test, Vairmohan measured the amount of power used to charge up an iPad with a drained battery. He assumed that users would charge up every other day. Over a year, the latest version of the iPad consumed 11.86 kilowatt-hours of electricity. (Older versions consume somewhat less power.)

The juice would cost $1.36 at the U.S. average residential price of 11.49 cents per kilowatt-hour.

But there's an even cheaper way to go than the iPad. EPRI calculated the cost of power needed to fuel an iPhone 4 for year: just 38 cents.

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stocks opened higher on better news on the housing front and on hopes that the Federal Reserve may come up with more plans to jumpstart the economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 101 points at 12,844 in the first hour of trading Tuesday.

Microsoft was one of the biggest gainers in the Dow. The stock jumped 3 percent after the company announced a new tablet computer called Surface to compete with the immensely popular iPad from Apple. Microsoft was up 93 cents at $30.78.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13 points to 1,358. Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P rose. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 32 points to 2,928.

American builders broke new ground on more single-family homes in May and requested more permits to build homes and apartments than they have in the past three and a half years. The increase suggests the housing market is slowly recovering.

The Commerce Department also said April was much better for housing starts than first thought. The government revised up the figures to 744,000 ? the fastest building pace since October 2008.

Traders are also hopeful because of recent signals from the Federal Reserve that the central bank may come up with plans to stimulate the economy at its two-day meeting which starts Tuesday.

Economists say that even if the Fed does not act after its meeting, it will send a clear message that it is standing by to do so if needed.

Economic policymakers are meeting at a time of growing urgency in Europe with Greece locked in power-sharing talks and the continent's next potential trouble spot, Spain, facing an increasingly slippery path to recovery.

While there was some relief that conservatives in Greece won national elections over the weekend, the results were inconclusive and the potential for more trouble in Athens has roiled markets for two days.

Also Spain paid sharply higher interest rates in a short-term bill auction Tuesday, suggesting doubts about the country's ability to stand on its own.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Oracle soared $1.38, or 5 percent, to $28.50 after the software maker surprised investors with the early release of its fourth-quarter earnings. The results beat Wall Street's forecasts, and the company said new software licenses increased sharply.

? J.C. Penney plunged $2.72, or 11 percent, to $21.63 after the chain store announced that Michael Francis, the former Target executive brought in to help redefine the company's brand, was leaving the company. It was the biggest loss of any stock in the S&P 500.

? Barnes & Noble fell 87 cents, or almost 6 percent, to $14.37 after the book store chain reported a wider loss than Wall Street was expecting. It also reported that its Nook e-reader sales fell 11 percent in the quarter.
