HAZELWOOD, MO ?(KTVI)?Taylor Rozier?s Hope for a Cure Brain Tumor Foundation was established by Lisa and Matt Rozier as a tribute to their beloved daughter, Taylor, who passed away in July 2009 at the age of 17 from a Glioblastoma brain tumor. Over 19 months Taylor faced and fought this disease with strength and courage and in so doing was an inspiration to everyone around her. While Taylor?s struggle against this terrible disease and her death will forever be a source of profound sadness for her family, her life and her example carried on through this Foundation will remain a testament to the enduring power of love, joy, faith and hope.
Every year nearly 4,000 parents hear the devastating diagnosis, ?your child has a brain tumor.? Most oft hese children?s prognoses are 1 to 5 years survival depending on the type and location of the tumor. There is a tremendous need for funding pediatric brain tumor research so these families may receive a better prognosis in the future. According to the American Cancer Society website, brain and spinal cord tumors are the second most common cancers in children (after leukemia) accounting for about 21% of childhood cancers. Survival rates for pediatric brain tumors have not seen a dramatic change in the past twenty years as some childhood cancers have. Brain tumors have the highest mortality rate of any childhood cancer.
In 2010 and 2011 the Taylor Rozier Hope for a Cure Brain Tumor Foundation hosted benefits. A sold outdinner/dance/auction both years have raised $110,000. One hundred percent of the proceeds were donated to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Dr. Josh Rubin?s research lab. Dr. Josh Rubin, pediatric neurooncologist, St. Louis Children?s Hospital, continues working to develop novel therapeutics and translate important lab findings into new clinical trials for children with brain tumors. In the coming year these trials will be conducted at Washington University and St. Louis Children?s Hospital, giving local children unique access to innovative brain tumor treatments. Dr. Rubin?s research is an important endeavor this Foundation will be supporting along with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
The U.S. Government spends far less money researching pediatric cancer than it does researching cancers more commonly found in adults. And pediatric brain tumor research funding comes from the modest amount awarded to general pediatric cancer research.
